In this research, ZnO particles were prepared by a Pechini sol-gel method and then amorphous powders were crystallized at temperatures of 350, 450 and 550°C for 2 h. The effect of crystallization temperature on the particle size, degree of crystallinity, and band gap of ZnO particles was discussed. Also, the sensing properties towards hydrogen gas at different temperatures were investigated. The results showed that crystallization at higher temperatures increased the degree of crystallinity and also the size of the particles becomes larger. Also, the bang gap changed with the change of crystallization temperature. The results of sensing properties towards hydrogen gas showed that the sensor fabricated from ZnO crystallized at 450°C had a better response to this gas than other gas sensors. It showed a response of 2 to 50 ppm H2 gas at 350°C. Overall, the obtained results showed that the crystallization temperature was effective on the characteristics of ZnO such as gas sensing properties, and hence, this temperature should be optimized for different applications.
