Ceramic insulators show good performance and unique features. The most important issue about ceramic insulators is their performance in polluted environmental conditions due to their hydrophilic surface which causes more electrical discharge compared to other insulators and reduces the electrical resistance of these insulators depending on the environmental conditions. This reduces the electrical resistance of the insulators in polluted environmental conditions. Nowadays, the use of polymer-based coatings is known as a solution to overcome this problem and thus prevent the aging and wear of polymer insulators. In this paper, using the proposed model of estimating the lifespan of several proposed criteria and based on experimental data, the lifespan of coated and uncoated ceramic insulators in different polluted environmental conditions is compared. Using the proposed model and comparing the lifespan of two uncoated and coated ceramic insulators, it was found that the lifespan of a silicon rubber-coated insulator has significantly improved in polluted environmental conditions, resulting in improved electrical discharge performance. The proposed multi-parameter model and experimental data of this research will provide numerical criteria that will be used in reliability analyzes and modeling of line maintenance methods according to environmental conditions (severity of pollution and ambient temperature).
