Abstract:   (21 Views)
In the present study, the effect of adding polypropylene fibers on the mechanical properties of alpha and beta calcium sulfate bone cement was evaluated. In order to investigate the phase composition and morphology of the fibers, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used, respectively. Then, 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1, and 1.5 weight percent of polypropylene fibers were added to the pure calcium sulfate mixture and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The test results showed that by adding a certain weight percentage of fibers to alpha calcium sulfate (up to 0.75%), the mechanical properties decreased and then increased from (1 to 1.5); such that the highest bending strength and tolerated force were related to the composite containing 1.5 weight percent polypropylene fibers up to about 483 Newtons. And by adding a certain weight percentage of polypropylene fibers to beta calcium sulfate (up to 0.5%), the mechanical properties increased and then decreased from (0.75 to 1.5), so that the highest bending strength and load capacity of the composite containing 0.5 weight percent polypropylene fibers was up to about 1678 Newtons.
