Metals are usually used in the manufacture of load-bearing implants due to having good mechanical properties. However, metals are bio-inert and so cannot induce the bone growth. Moreover, in the bone fracture healing, its fixation by implant is necessary and loosening of implant because of having poor mechanical locking with surrounding tissues leads to failure of implantation. Another problems associated with metallic implants are poor wear resistance and corrosion of them which usually cause inflammatory responses and reducing the lifetime of implant. Therefore, to achieve more acceptance, the surface modification of metallic implants with bioactive, hard and corrosion resistant coatings has received increasing attention. One of the successful methods in this field is plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The purpose of the present paper is to study PEO and the parameters affecting the morphology and properties of the coatings obtained by this method.
