Investigation on the behavior of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 coated by Nano-sized Li2ZrO3

The electrochemical properties of the layered structure LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) materials decrease at an elevated cut-off voltage. To improve the stability of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) during charging/discharging processes, surface coating may hinder the side reactions on the interphase between active material and electrolyte. In the present work, NCM523 is coated with 1wt%, 3wt% and 5wt% of Li2ZrO3 through a sol – gel method in aqueous solution and charactrised by electrochemical performance analysis 1wt% Li2ZrO3 coated sample based on the results of charge-discharge tests at 0.05C, 0.1C and 0.2C delivers capacity of 125, 91.34 and 79.32 mAhg-1 respectively which is the highest capacity than the other samples. The results of cyclability test showed that the 1wt% Li2ZrO3 coated sample delivers the capacity of 40 mAhg-1 after 40 cycles at 1C rate which is much higher than the other samples. also the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test showed that the diffiusion coefficient of Li+-ion of 1wt% Li2ZrO3 coated sample has been greatly increased. Altogether, the results proved that the coating layer of Li2ZrO3 plays an important role in alleviating structural damage of NCM523  during the charge / discharge processes from electrolyte contact.
